Bein' A Guy

©Lydia Lord

When I was a kid, some years ago
There was a lot I didn't know
About how boys turn into men
Here is what I thought back then:

Bein' a guy is a full-time job
There's a lot you've got to do
Showin' the world you're brave and strong
So the world looks up to you
Winnin' the game & takin' the prize
Hangin' around the rest of the guys
And when you get hurt, refusin' to cry
It's hard work bein' a guy

So as I grew up I learned to fight
Learned to be smarter, learned to be right
Now I know that wasn't the way
Here is what I think today:

Bein' a guy is a full-time job
There's a lot you've got to feel
Learnin' to trust the voice inside
That is the voice that's real
Knowin' that strong is different than tough
Lettin' your best be good enough
Sharin' your truth & darin' to cry
Lookin' the world in the eye
Yes, the job's - full - time
But I'm glad - that - I'm - a - guy!
