Graduation

Graduating to grown-up
Took a lifetime to do
Two late bloomers who made it
What we had to go through

I was never thin enough
Cute enough, smart enough
Never any good at stuff
That’s what I thought
When the guy proposed to me
I was quick to agree
Someone to be nice to me
Not what I got!

Lots of years he put me down
Yelled and frowned, slept around
Left me home and went to town
What could I do?
Ate a lot to compensate
Gained the weight, not so great
Finally I had to state
“That’s it; I'm through!”

Now I'm happy on my own
Time has flown, I have grown
I don’t need a chaperone
Any longer
Since I left the man behind
Bottom line: doin' fine
Self-esteem is redefined
Now – it's – stronger!
