We’re All We Need

© Lydia Lord

My mother didn’t believe that I could learn how to cope
She did everything for me; I felt like a dope
And I grew up with the feeling that there wasn’t much hope
For me to try something new
I haven’t taken many chances cause they might not work out
When you’re never encouraged, you’re always in doubt
But maybe now at 80 I have figured it out
I know what I can do

Chorus:

But I wish someone had said
“Take time for you instead
Trust your heart -- use your head
You can succeed”
I’m sayin’ this to you
What you can dream, you can do”
I’ve learned one thing is true:
I’m all I need

As far as dad was concerned, my choices weren’t very hot
I wanted to please him. You know I could not
He was demanding & sarcastic & I finally got
He’d never be satisfied
So I worked for recognition, till I started to see
The approval of others is no guarantee
Because it’s my own approval that matters to me
And I can find that inside

Chorus:

But I wish someone had said
“Take time for you instead
Trust your heart -- use your head
You can succeed”
I’m sayin’ this to you
“What you can dream, you can do”
I’ve learned one thing is true:
I’m all I need
You’re all you need
We’re - all - we need!
