On The Road!

“I really enjoyed hearing the personal stories; it made me feel like they trusted us and helped me with my own problems.” -Sophomore, Warrenton High School

Every fall, a new troupe of 7-9 elders is assembled, and a new Encore show is created based on their life experiences. In the spring this show is toured free to thousands of young people through out Oregon. Since 1998, Encore has performed for youth in elementary/middle/ high schools, alternative schools, detention facilities, and community programs. (See History for a list of shows.)

All Encore shows are a weave of the troupers’ own stories, enlivened with original songs, dance and rap. Shows are interactive, and audiences are encouraged to participate: answering questions, joining in songs, and even learning ASL signs to accompany performers. The 45-55 minute presentation is followed by a question and answer session, and can also be accompanied by a TRUTHeatre workshop. Kids of all ages have an instant connection with the Encore elders; they are struck by the honesty, and surprised when they hear their own stories mirrored in the show.

Encore is built for travel; the set is mobile and performances take place in a wide variety of spaces (gym, cafeteria, auditorium, library, classroom, etc). Each show is developed for a specific age group, and focuses on topics that are relevant to them. Script and song content depend upon the troupers involved each year and their life experiences, but in every show history is personalized and issues of growing up are discussed. In past shows topics have included bullying, dating, anger, peer pressure, career choices, parenting, alcohol and drug use, and sexuality.

Teachers and staff are sent a description of the show in advance, along with discussion questions that help prepare the kids and broaden the value of the presentation. All audience members also receive questionnaires after seeing Encore shows. This feedback often guides the focus of subsequent scripts, and continually reinforces the value and need for the program. (See Youth and Staff Feedback.)

Encore is free to youth and the facilities that serve them, but donations to travel expenses are greatly appreciated, and lunch with the kids adds to the experience! Public performances of the current touring show occur monthly every spring, and help fund the free shows for young people. (See Community Performances for a schedule.)

“I was reminded of the difficulties of growing up and parenting. It reminded me that we’re all trying to find our way.” -Teacher, Elkton High School
