Encore took its first tentative steps into youth detention in spring 1998, when we did our first show at the local facility. We didn’t know what to expect from those “tough guys,” and we were pretty nervous! We soon learned that kids in lock-up are often much more open to Encore’s honesty than kids in school. After that first performance, one boy’s question —“Have you guys ever thought about doing this with kids?” — was the beginning of our outreach programs, which now include TRUTHeatre workshops and Patchwork Players residencies. |
