The Aging Anthem

©Lydia Lord

Chorus:

Aging is a trial
Aging is a drag
The parts that used to stand up
Have all begun to sag
My sight depends on glasses
My hearing's not so hot
And I just thought of something
But I can't remember what

Now when I look for the girl I was
I can't even find the traces
My hair was fat and my stomach was thin
But now they've traded places
My joints won't do what I ask them to
My brain is apt to sidetrack
I look like a stack of tires
But at least I'm not a short stack

Chorus:

Looking in the mirror
What I see is sad
I've turned into my mother
I look just like my dad
The body I came in with
Forsook me long ago
And left this gray-haired elder
That I don't really know

My hair now grows in my ears and nose
My head looks like a cue ball
My brain is toast when I need it most
I feel like a total screwball
My wrinkles are beyond compare
My hair is gray and thinning
I'm in a war with gravity
And gravity is winning

Chorus:

Still I can be thankful
For every passing year
Though I may be diminished
You notice I'm still here
These lines all tell the story
Of how I've laughed and cried
And how I've learned to make the best
Of who - I - am - in - side.
