Bein' Different

©Lydia Lord

What did you do when you didn’t fit
Did you hang around? Did you give up and quit?
Growin’ up can be a slippery slope
Tell me the truth now. How did you cope?

Never told anybody I was a Jew
But deep inside, I was scared they knew
In the high school pond you can sink or swim
So I found a boy. I was safe with him.

I learned to dance and I told great jokes
So I got to hang out with the popular folks
Uptight city boys gave me some grief
But I fit in the choir and what a relief

Every time I thought that I didn’t belong
Seemed one or two other kids came along
None of us fit, and we all knew it
So we helped each other get on though it

Now just hold on! Not to be unpleasant
But I think we need to talk about the present
You never fit in back then, you say
Well I don’t fit in here today

Been there done that, I’m with you
Cause I feel different from these guys too
They all like huggin’, which I just hate
Because I’m gay some can’t relate

I’ve got some guns
And I’m non-violent
I like to talk
I’d rather be silent

Chorus (2X):
But bein’ different ain’t bein’ wrong
All of us can learn to get along
I never fit in (clap, clap) no way
But in or out (clap) I’m ok
