Rappin' the Rules

©Lydia Lord

When I was a kid, my big concern
Was all of those rules I had to learn
About bein' a girl And bein' a guy
The rules were hard to classify
Girls weren't supposed to be too smart!
Guys weren't supposed to show much heart!
A lot of those rules were never said
You just had to watch how they worked instead

Oh/yeah, had to follow that rule
Or take the risk to look like a fool

RHYTHM PATTERN

Guys had to call and ask for a date
Girls had to sit by the phone and wait
Guys had to walk with a manly stride
Girls were supposed to gently glide
Mom kept tellin' me "Stand up straight!"
I tried to glide, but I wasn't that great
Cross your legs in the wrong position
And you'd be eyed with deep suspicion

Oh/yeah, had to follow that rule
Math wasn't all we learned in school!

RHYTHM PATTERN

The boy-girl thing was a mystery
Getting' a guy to respond to me
Flirtin' and flutterin' did not work
I tried that once and felt like a jerk
Didn't take a genius to realize
I couldn't be a jock cause I wasn't that size
Runnin' was one thing I could do
It's OK, pal, I'm the wrong size too!

Oh/yeah, tried to follow that rule
Or face disgrace and ridicule
But I figured it out eventually
The bottom line was was -be me!
