Stereotype Rap

©Lydia Lord

A stereotype is a way to feel
If you won't take the time to learn what's real
Put somebody in a category
You don't have to listen to the real story
An easy excuse for the labelin' game
Is thinkin' some people are all the same
But you won't ever get what a person's about
If you don't get to know 'em from the inside out

Rub out the rumor
Hang up the hype
Gotta get past that stereotype

I wish I could rap, I'd be a sensation
But I can't, cause I'm a Caucasian
All Irish are drunks, so some folks think
But this Irish guy hardly takes a drink
People say Jews are loud and pushy
But here is one who's quiet and mushy
My dad was mean-I became the same
It's taken years to reclaim that name

Rub out the rumor
Hang up the hype
Gotta get past that stereotype

Big folks used to intimidate me
Until I thought how scary I might be
My hair is silver and I'm very old
That doesn't mean I'm ready to fold
I was born in the south, as you can hear
So people of color think I'm to fear
Most people think black people can rap
But me personally I sound like crap

Rub out the rumor
Hang up the hype
Gotta get past that stereotype

Bein' gay doesn't really say
I can't relate in another way
And bein' Christian doesn't mean I'm square
You might even find that I'm open and fair
I'm in jail but that doesn't mean
I'm out to get you or mess up your scene
Some think I'm weird, but I don't agree
I'm just unique and totally me

Rub out the rumor
Hang up the hype
Gotta get past that stereotype
