Tough Cookie

©Lydia Lord

My gramma wasn't happy with her life, you see
I'm sorry to say she took it out on me
If I did somethin' she was ticked about
She'd cut a switch and whip me till her arm wore out
All those lickin's
Hurt like the dickens
I kept it inside
And I never cried, 'cause

Tough cookies don't crumble
Tough cookies bite back
When you're a tough cookie
It's hard to be humble
And I'm the toughest cookie in the pack, Mac

I really loved the high school where I went
But my family had to move where there was cheaper rent
I saved my money and I bought a bike
Rode 10 miles to school to be with the friends I liked
The rain got me wet
The sun made me sweat
But in the right school
You're totally cool, and

Tough cookies can't crumble
Tough cookies, watch your back
When you're a tough cookie
You better not fumble
Cause no one's gonna cut you any slack, Mac

Then I got married to Mr. Wrong
Gotta say that lasted way too long
He said I'd never be successful in life
But I've done a lot better since I'm not his wife

Now I'm gettin' older and my heart's not great
I still find a lot of things to celebrate:
The open heart surgery that let me live
And the open heart in Encore I get to give
World keeps turnin'
I keep learnin'
Now I can see
I don't have to be a

Tough cookie every minute
At risk of a heart attack
I can be a smart cookie
With a soft center in it
And glad to be part of the pack, Mac
